The Writing Round-Up {4.13.19}

April 10, 2019

Welcome to the April 13, 2019 edition of the Teach Write Writing Round-Up!  It's hard to believe that we are almost halfway through April, isn't it?

Every week, I gather tips for teaching writing and for growing as a teacher who writes and put them right here all in one place.

Be sure that you have joined my email list so you never miss an update!

Now, onto this week's tips...

Conferring with Confidence:

If you cringe when you think of conferring with your student writers, Julie Patterson has some tips to make conferring much easier and productive in her post, "3 Things I Wish I Had Understood Sooner About Conferring with Student Writers."

Writing That Saves:

Many of our students struggle to see themselves in the books they read. So is writing their own text one way to take back their voice and power?  Enjoy "Maybe I Could Save Myself by Writing" by Chicago teen, Jose Olivarez. It is very powerful!

Music Inspires Writing:

The New York Times has written a fabulous post about the effect music has on writing and includes many lesson ideas to try out yourself.  Enjoy "Nine Teaching Ideas for Using Music to Inspire Writing."

NY Times Poetry Contest for Students:

Students are invited to enter the New York Times's Poetry Contest. This year's contest is seeking blackout poetry entries using the New York Times. More information about how to enter or about how to write blackout poetry can be found here

Busting Through Writer's Block:

The Writing Routines website shares some interesting ways to move past writer's block and help the words flow again. Check out "What Great Writer's Do About Writer's Block." These ideas would be interesting to share with students too!

I will see you back here next week for the next edition of The Writing Round-Up. Wishing you a wonderful week with lots of memorable experiences to write about!

Write away!
