The Writing Round-Up {9.24.17}

Welcome to the September 24th, 2017 edition of the Writing Round-Up!

I'm so glad you are here this week. I've found some awesome tips and articles that I can't wait to share with you so let's get started:

For Teachers of Writers

What Hummingbirds Can Teach Us About Conferring:

Conferring with student writers can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. Patty McGee, author of the awesome book, Feedback That Moves Writers Forward, shares some more tips for conferring that she discovered while watching a hummingbird in "Teach Like a Hummingbird."

Learning About Writing from Captain Underpants:

If you haven't seen this CBS documentary clip about how author Dav Pilkey was inspired to write the Captain Underpants series (in second grade!!), you should. Then you should show it to your students. Why? Because Pilkey will inspire students to use their special talents (in his case, ADD) to create magic in their writing.

Peer Feedback Helps All Writers Grow:

Katherine James shares some great ways to teach your students to help each other by offering peer feedback that is constructive, specific and engaging in this post from Edutopia. If you would like to free up more time for conferring, teaching your students how to support each other when you are not available is a must-do.

Writing Across the Curriculum:

Want to chat with other educators about teaching writing? Join @NWPWVU for their "Writing Across the Curriculum Chat" (#WVEdChat) on Tuesday, September 26 at 8:00 pm ET.

For Teachers Who Write

J.K. Rowling Inspires:

J.K. Rowling is undoubtedly one of the most successful writers ever. What can we learn about writing from her? Read "5 Ways J.K. Rowling Can Help You Improve Your Writing" and find out! (#2 is what I struggle with the most. How about you?)

Do You Call Yourself a Writer?

Join the #TeachWrite chat group on Monday, October 2 at 7:30pm ET for our monthly chat. This month's topic is "I Am a Writer." If you'd like to receive email reminders of the chat, you can sign up here: www.remind.com/join/teachwri

Join the Daily Writing Project!:

Last week, I started a daily writing challenge for myself that I call the Daily Writing Project (DWP). Every day, I will choose one word and write about it. It doesn't matter what I write, as long as I write. I am publishing my daily writing on my personal blog, Sweet Writing Life, and to share my progress on Twitter using the hashtag #DWHabit. I invite you to join me and share as well!

Every Sunday, the Writing Round-Up shares a few of our favorite finds about teaching writing and other topics of interest to writing teachers.

Find these ideas helpful? We would love it if you would share it on your social media or email it to a friend.

Why not sign up for our email list so you can get the Writing Round-Up delivered right to your inbox every Sunday morning? You can find the sign up by clicking here.
